Sustainable travel is emerging as the new norm, reshaping how we experience the world and our impact on it.

The global travel industry is experiencing a turnaround – travelers are no longer simply looking for beautiful views and luxury hotels. They also want to experience nature in a way that preserves it for future generations. They feel the need to journeying responsibly into the future! Responsible travel and sustainable tourism are not a fad; they represent a global movement that shapes the future of travel. Do you know that today, as many as 60% of travelers seek sustainable travel options?

ECOTOURISM: THE RISE OF TRAVEL THAT PROTECTS NATURE

Ecotourism is one of the fastest growing forms of tourism. The State of Travel 2024 report, prepared by the Skift Research in collaboration with various global partners and tourism industry experts, notes that as many as 42% of travelers are looking for destinations where they can connect with nature reserves and pristine nature. This shows the ever-increasing interest of travelers in trips that have a positive impact on the environment and local communities. Lisa Chen, the president of ToursByLocals, notes the importance of authentic experiences and the role of the local community: “We’ve noticed a shift in travel. People want to invest in hyper-local, authentic, and intimate experiences that contribute to local communities.”

Responsible tourism does not only mean reduced environmental impact, but also social responsibility towards local communities. The results of a 2023 survey by Booking.com also openly support this. For as many as 69% of travelers, it is important that the money they spend goes back into the local economy and that their visit has a positive impact on local residents.

WELLNESS TRAVELS: CARE FOR THE BODY AND SPIRIT

Wellness tourism is experiencing exceptional growth, with an increase of 25% recorded over the past years. An increasing number of travelers are looking for vacations that enable them to fully recover their bodies and mind. Wellness centers, yoga retreats, natural sources of curative water, and meditation workshops are among the most desired forms of relaxation. People want not only physical relaxation, but also mental renewal, which includes a deep connection with the natural environment.

According to a survey by the Global Wellness Institute, this segment of tourism is worth more than 4.5 billion dollars, which proves that wellness is no longer just a luxury, but rather a necessity for modern travelers. Many destinations around the world today invest in infrastructure that provides wellness experiences, while prioritizing natural methods to reduce stress, improve health and facilitating comprehensive regeneration.

BOUTIQUE DESTINATIONS: ATTRACTING CONSCIOUS TRAVELERS

Mass tourism has completely lost its charm for many. Conscious travelers are increasingly turning to boutique destinations where they can experience deeper connections with the local area and its culture. The State of Travel 2024 survey states that as many as 35% of tourists are looking for lesser-known, hidden gems where they can escape the crowds and discover places with a rich history and unique stories. These destinations offer a unique experience that combines authenticity, sustainability and respect for the local environment.

According to Condé Nast Traveler, the boutique tourism trend is most noticeable in European and Asian countries, where small accommodation facilities with local involvement have become popular for their exclusivity and personalized experience. Such destinations provide unrepeatable moments that allow travelers to truly immerse themselves in local culture and tradition.

RESPONSIBLE TOURISM: TRAVELS OF THE FUTURE

Responsible tourism, where travelers and providers of tourism services strive to reduce negative environmental impacts, improve economic benefits for local communities and protect cultural heritage, is becoming an essential element of the future of travel. State of Travel 2024 notes that 60% of travelers are willing to pay more for environmentally responsible travel services. Sustainability is becoming a fundamental factor when choosing a destination and services, as modern travelers want to be part of the solution, not the problem. The future of tourism will be based on investing in the sustainability of infrastructure and reducing environmental impact. Richard G. Edwards, the founder of Untours, highlights the importance of the reality and credibility of these practices: “Good alignment with verified supply chains holds more value than just a sustainability label.”
Travelers are increasingly coming to appreciate solutions that are proven and truly contribute to a better world.

WOOD WE GO AND THE FUTURE OF SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL

For those who want to travel with responsibility toward the environment and local communities, choosing a destination that emphasizes sustainability is essential. We at WOOD WE GO believe that sustainable travel is the key to the future of tourism. Our philosophy is based on creating experiences that not only preserve natural resources, but also connect visitors with nature in a deeper, more permanent way. The boutique destinations that we visit ourselves are not just places, but also living examples of the harmony between nature and humans. We are aware that today, luxury does not only mean prestige, but also a balance between nature and well-being.

Today, travelers who want to be part of the solution, not the problem, are becoming actors in the preservation of the planet. WWG stands for tourism in which sustainability is not only a choice, but also a necessity. For us, travel is not only a new and inspiring experience, but also a route to a better life and a responsible future. An article about one of our last visited destinations shows this nicely – invite yourself to Nebesa Chalets (“Heaven” Chalets), the space between the earth, sky, and the reflections of your own horizons.
