Up in the heights beyond everyday life
Some thousand metres above sea level, surrounded by the picturesque panorama of the Julian Alps, Nebesa (heaven in Slovenian) is a unique oasis of tranquillity and silent dreaminess. The small houses on the panoramic terrace, perched on the slope of Mt Kuk, seem like cosy nests that reflect the luxury of silence and privacy in the embrace of nature. Their boutique experience of a getaway in pristine nature is a privilege for four couples only. The glass walls are more telling than any decoration. While sitting on a sofa, you become part of these mountains. You’re hovering between earth and sky, swimming in the Soča River or paragliding over Mt Krn.
Theatre of nature and inspiration
When we first stepped on their terrace, we saw a view that exceeded all our expectations by far. We could’ve stayed there for hours, watching the changing landscape. The view from Nebesa resembles the opening of a curtain in the theatre of nature where a new spectacle is played out every day. When you gaze upon the peaks of the Julian Alps and the emerald Soča in the valley where Alpine freshness and Mediterranean sunshine meet, thoughts become clearer, instincts sharpen and life slows down. Harmony of nature at the junction of the Alps and the Mediterranean
The Posočje region is situated in western Slovenia and extends along the Soča, one of the most scenic rivers in Europe. The boutique experience entitled ‘7 Stories and Flavours of the Roš Sisters’ is an homage to the land of living waters and mountains. Ana Roš, one of the world’s best female chefs, is Maja’s sister, which is why special family ties link Hiša Franko with Nebesa. After all, the majority of Nebesa’s guests are also the guests of the restaurant boasting three Michelin stars, which is only a 15-minute drive away from Nebesa.
Their joint High on Life venture is an unrivalled experience for all senses, a journey into the world of the stories, flavours and people of the Soča Valley, during which you can learn about the Soča trout, the Drežnica goat, and the Cika cattle, try dumplings, mountain cheese and curd, and harvest herbs. Our walk with herbalist Miha, who forages herbs for the best female chef in the world, was deeply inspiring and we’ll never forget it.

Nebesa provides an intimate space in the middle of nature and the boutique offer can also be found in the surrounding area. Those seeking an escape and thirsting for adventure can find numerous interesting and hidden corners in Posočje. The area is known for its rich history and mysteriousness. So, a day or perhaps two will certainly not be enough. Sports enthusiasts can choose from cycling, climbing, hiking, rowing, fishing and paragliding. Posočje is also known as a Mecca for food lovers. It’s the home of shepherds, cheese makers, hunters, fishermen and mushroom pickers, which is why many superb inns offering genuine local flavours are located in the vicinity. Award-winning architecture that erases borders
Nebesa is a small village and a hidden architectural gem offering aesthetic comfort and homely ease. Architect Rok Klanjšček and his team from the Real Engineering architectural studio, the authors of several internationally acclaimed projects, have answered the question of whether a naturally beautiful place can be further aesthetically refined. They won three awards with the Nebesa project, i.e. the 2003 Golden Bird Award, the 2004 Plečnik Gold Medal, and the 2004 Piranesi Award, and were nominated for the 2004 Mies van der Rohe Award. “In essence, the settlement rests on a traditional design in which the outdoor mixes with the indoor and everything functions in a unique blend,” was how one of the committees described the project.

Onto the lawn, bordering a steep slope, we drag robust, yet comfortable wooden chairs from the house and position them on the corner of the lawn. We sit down on the edge of Nebesa (heaven in English) and gaze at the 360-degree film screen that shows a heavenly view. This is the image you see when you visit their website and it will make you long to see it in person. We take a few selfies and then some shots of the majestic Krn mountains beyond the valley…
